The Flow: Artist Jessica Scherlag

The procrastination continues for us here at The Flow. Sorry about that!
So this week we are featuring Jessica Scherlag, a senior art major at Drew University (Christa’s alma matter and Emilyn’s current place of study). Next year she will be attending NYU for Visual Art Administration Her work has a strong feminist narrative and she considers a lot of gender related issues in her process (plus she is an organizer with the feminist group on her campus!) You can find out more about her here. And the works from her Senior Studio course (its the equivalent of a thesis for art majors at Drew) at her website. More art after the cut!

I’ve always had love in my heart for femmes and have struggled with the femme label that is often placed on me and how that affects how I perceive my identity. I feel like there is a lot of distain towards femmes (maybe dismissal is a better term?) within the radical queer community and femmes face a lot of invisibility in the both the queer community and mainstream society (partially because they pass as straight). One quote that has always stood out for me is from Stone Butch Blues when one of the femmes says “If I’m not with a butch everyone just assumes I’m straight. It’s like I’m passing too, against my will I’m sick of the world thinking I’m straight. I’ve worked hard to be discriminated against as a lesbian.” So when I heard this piece by Ivan Coyote, I couldn’t help but swoon just a little bit.

No feminist music collection would be complete with out a little Ani Difranco. We could probably post about an Ani song for a year and still have some good feminist lyrics to work with. So we decided to do a best of. These are our favorite political/feminist Ani songs! We uploaded the mix so you can download them here: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=7fcba7b234d0c6ea75a4fc82078ae6c89c8414983fff7c58416b94653a3044fd
Thanks to everyone who sent us the songs Christa was lacking in their library.

The Flow: Lenelle Moïse

Emilyn and I have wanted to put a piece up by Lenelle Moïse for some time now but I was waiting til I had a bit more free time to write down the lyrics to one of her pieces (its hard to find them online). I first saw Lenelle at a spoken word show/art opening with queer women artists in New York. I liked her so much that I booked her at venue where I worked with the collaboration of Drew SDS and a few other campus groups. She has great politics, beautiful poetry, and fantastic stage presence. I felt compelled to post something by her now because Lenelle is Haitian-American and one of her poems was recently posted online. Here is Mud Mothers. Below I also included a video of her piece “Envy” as well as some links!

Dave End is a gender-bending queer performer from West Philly. His act is really fun and involves a lot of sequins
His lyrics are also great, as you can see below. We wanted to use the lyrics from Phat Camp, which are also great, but there was no fun video to go along with it.

You’re so good to me
I know but I can’t change
Tried to tell you
But you look at me like maybe

The song for this week is actually by a dude, but the lyrics fit our criteria, so enjoy! Also, the video isn’t an actual video, just a series of pictures, but you get to hear the song, which is the important part.

I’m really excited to announce that we are showcasing a visual artist this week! Katherine Murdock attended Drew University with Emilyn and I and has does really interesting work with different mediums. She has done paintings/works with themes of sexual assault, environmentalism, and breast cancer. You can check out her work and artist statement on her website: http://katherinemurdock.carbonmade.com/ Enjoy some of her pieces below!
