Privilege:

a poem for men who don’t understand what we mean when we say they have it

by D.A. Clarke

privilege is simple:
going for a pleasant stroll after dark,
not checking the back of your car as you get in, sleeping soundly,
speaking without interruption, and not remembering
dreams of rape, that follow you all day, that woke you crying, and
privilege
is not seeing your stripped, humiliated body
plastered in celebration across every magazine rack, privilege
is going to the movies and not seeing yourself
terrorized, defamed, battered, butchered
seeing something else

Dave End is a gender-bending queer performer from West Philly.  His act is really fun and involves a lot of sequins 🙂  His lyrics are also great, as you can see below.  We wanted to use the lyrics from Phat Camp, which are also great, but there was no fun video to go along with it.

Hey, I haven’t seen you in forever! How are you?” People greet me enthusiastically. I haven’t seen them in over four months. I nod and smile and give vague, canned responses. I know but I can’t change
Tried to tell you

I’m an angel underneath
Innocent and sweet

Here is a video for those folks that still have some questions about gender, sex, trans issues, etc.  Its also a good educational tool when you are trying to inform someone that has no concept of gender identity.  I think they do a pretty good job at hitting most of the issues.  Of course there will always be minor problems, but I think the positiveness of the video outweighs them!  The background music is pretty great too 😉

Its a bit long…almost 20 minutes.

We’re waiting for a transcript for this video which we’ve been told will be up soon, we’ll post it as soon as we have it!
